What’s included:
Each order covers 2 people, so you and your chosen partner (whether it’s a friend, lover, or anyone you want to spend the day with) can enjoy the experience together!
You’ll learn the basics of handbuilding and layering with clay, including shaping, texturing, and decorating, with plenty of opportunity for creativity and fun.
Spaces are limited to 2 pairs, so make sure to grab your spot soon!
Clay-curious? Need a new hobby, creative art form, community-building experience? Then this CERAMIC HANDBUILDING WORKSHOP is for you, designed especially for well versed ceramicists and newbies alike. I will be teaching how to create my bestselling Canyon and Range pieces – working with a distinct style of traditional Nerikomi technique and Agateware. You will learn how to layer different colored clays to create unique patterns and swirls. It will be messy. It will be fun. This is not a precise workshop – mistakes are allowed and often turn into gorgeous handbuilt pieces of art!
The Workshop will be held at my Greenpoint studio on saturday from 10-1:30PM. Space is limited to 4 students, allowing for an incredibly focused and personal venue.
Starting with a brief history of Nerikomi and my own personal ceramic journey, a detailed presentation of how to create the layered clay follows - where I will make either a mug or a plate as demonstration. You’ll be able to follow the steps I use in my technique, as well as learn insider tips for creating a slab of clay to work with. All participants will have approximately 2.5 hours to create their own pieces from the layered clay that YOU will make – either one large piece or two smaller pieces. I’ll be available to answer any and all questions or provide support. There will be music, snacks and a relaxed, inspiring atmosphere!
Once the pieces are completed at the end of the workshop, I will bisque and glaze fire your pieces for you and within approx 2 weeks you’ll be able to pick them up! If you have any leftover clay, you're welcome to bring it home.
Cost includes clay, tools, aprons, glaze and firing of up to 2 pieces per person.
Registration/Cancellation policy: No refund, credit only if canceled one-week prior the class. If I personally have to cancel or change the workshop, you will have the option to get a refund or change the date along with me.
All detailed information will be emailed directly to you once you purchase the class.
Praise for this workshop:
“TAKE THIS WORKSHOP! Participating in Ivy's class was like a shot of espresso into my artistic routine, what a blast! It proved to be incredibly inspiring and informative, AND the space was just so gorgeous. The class I took had individuals with varying skill levels, from seasoned ceramic enthusiasts to curious beginners, and Ivy's calm and inspiring guidance catered to everyone. The pacing of the class was well-balanced (no one was rushed!!), we learned the history of the specific style we focused on, picked up valuable tips and tricks to enhance our personal practices, and, most importantly, had a lot of fun. Plus everyone walked away with a handmade ceramic piece, which can be really rare with short ceramic classes! I can easily see myself gifting this workshop to creative friends who have been clay curious, Ivy is simply the best.” - Samantha
“Ivy, I just wanted to say thank you so much again for your time, patience, and carefree attitude on Saturday! It was really refreshing to learn a new technique in such a supportive space. You are a natural, giving teacher, allowing plenty of space for creativity, and encouraging us to trust the process. I feel reinvigorated to go back to my home studio and try some new things! Really had such a good time, which I expected, but I also felt very zen when I left, which was a nice surprise <3” - Dana
